Title: The Madhouse
Author: Michelle
Email: michelle [at] waking-vision.com
Fandom: LotRPS
Summary: Viggo is a consultant in one of the busiest A&E departments in London. Orlando is just starting out as a resident and quite obviously Viggo hates his guts. Or does he?
Pairing: Viggo/Orlando
Genre: slash
Warnings: AU. This story takes place in a hospital, so please expect needles, monitors that beep and the occasional blood-splatter. And yes, patients might die. If it’s any consolation: This is more “Grey’s Anatomy” than it is “The Pitt”.
Rating: Explicit
Disclaimer: I’m sure many people are called Viggo or Orlando. But I can promise that I don’t know any of them. (And that’s a shame.)
Author’s Note I: This is a very late entry for 2025’s Medwhumpmay. The prompt sheet can be found here. And while this story contains a bit of whump and h/c the main focus is the character dynamics. I started writing this having no more than the premise for the first chapter and the authorial voice. I love to research and I love to make the backdrop of my stories as realistic as possible. But maybe it’s better if you imagine that my evil twin wrote this story. The idea here was to explore a different version of V/O. I never planned on the story getting this long and elaborate. Initially, this was simply a palate cleanser that I wrote in-between; research and accuracy weren’t exactly at the forefront. Which is to say: I apologise to everyone working in the medical field. I know this is not how foundation training works. And I know this has basically zero in common with the inner workings of the NHS. Just roll with it. This one was written for funsies!
Author’s Note II: This story was heavily inspired by me binging “24 Hours in A&E”. That show is actually where the title comes from. Some episodes inspired chapters in this story. And even if the story doesn’t come with my usual level of research the medical facts and procedures are as accurate as I could make them (as an ordinary person without – and I say it again – any background in medicine). I’ve added a cheat sheet with terminology/definitions for everyone who likes that sort of thing. However, all explanations necessary to make sense of the plot are within the story. The cheat sheet is a bonus, you don’t have to use it. And anyways, the hospital is only the backdrop of the story, the boys are the main attraction. Feel free to let the medical language wash over you without understanding a word of it.

Title: Pink Slime
Author: Fernanda Trias
Translator: Heather Cleary
Genre: Literary fiction

Last night I finished book #18 from the “Women in Translation” rec list, which was Pink Slime by Fernanda Trias, translated from Spanish by Heather Cleary. Pink Slime is a dreamy nightmare of a novel set in the aftershocks of an ecological disaster as one woman struggles to hold onto her life.

Nothing is as it once was: society has been upended by the “red wind” that kills anyone caught in it; the narrator is divorced from the husband she first met in childhood; and she has left her job in journalism to work as a caretaker for a disabled young boy.

This is a reflective book; there is very little plot. It drifts between the narrator’s present, her memories of the past, and in some cases, a future-tense look at the next few minutes. She observes the ways the government tries to cover for the damage the red wind continues to do, and the way society continues to fracture. She continues to visit her ex-husband in the hospital, although his condition never changes. She continues to fight with her mother.

In some ways, Pink Slime is a story about someone trying to hold onto a life that is already gone. The narrator clings to the past, for obvious reasons—it was better than her present. And yet, nothing new can be made until she releases that hold.

The thing that will stick with me most about this book is the birds. In the narrator’s world, the birds have gone. Where, no one knows. It is a topic of frequent discussion among the townsfolk. Will the birds come back? It reminds of a line from a Florence + The Machine Song: “What if one day there’s no such thing as snow?” Ecological disaster brings with it a poignant grief. How do you explain birds to a child who’s never seen them but in picture books? What is lost for each of us when an animal or plant or phenomenon is destroyed?

I enjoyed the morose, grief-stricken mood of the book, but it does feel directionless at times in a way that’s not wholly captivating. I can’t say what I take away from it on the whole. I would be curious to read more from this author.

Thanks for your patience! After driving 2400km during the last two weeks in order to move three unbroken/unhandled foals, I'm now back home, exhausted and relieved that everything went according to plan. Anyways, back to the boys. Where did we leave them yesterday?

Nominations have closed! We will be double-checking the tagset over the next few days, and signups will open on May 23 at 8:00 PM EDT.

Nomination questions

  • Original Work - Body & Body's Own Ghost and Female Body & Body's Own Ghost: Nominator, do you have an edit for this that might imply the body is itself aware in some way? We usually don't accept nominations for objects, and it's implied the body in this case is dead.

  • Ronon Dex & Teyla Emmagan & Rodney McKay & a John Sheppard (Stargate): Nominator, can you confirm that the "a" in the last part of this nomination is a typo? Or are there John Sheppard clones/alternate versions, and you're open to any of them? (If we don't hear from you, we'll approve this as Ronon Dex & Teyla Emmagan & Rodney McKay & John Sheppard.

  • Warlock (1989): We have nominations for Warlock & Seer and Warlock & Unbaptized Boy. Nominator, we couldn't find any details on the Seer and the Unbaptized Boy. Could you clarify here where they appear in the film, just in case someone needs additional details?

  • Eleven | Jane Hopper (Stranger Things) & Carrie White (Carrie - All Media Types): Nominator, since the original novel and the various adaptations have some key differences, can you choose a specific canon version for Carrie White?

  • Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) & Carrie White (Carrie - All Media Types): Nominator, since the original novel and the various adaptations have some key differences, can you choose a specific canon version for Carrie White?

  • Any (Hollow Knight: Silksong): Nominator, are you intending to narrow the Any down to only characters appearing in Silksong, or is this a nomination for characters in the series generally? And should it be Solo: Any or Any & Any?

Nomination clarifications

  • Anthology Programs: We have approved nominations for various anthology programs such as Tales from the Crypt, Inside No. 9, and Black Mirror in the format in which they've been submitted (some as standalone episodes and others as complete shows). We're happy to go with the fandom convention in this case, but please note that requesting, for example, three separate episodes of Black Mirror will not count as requesting three distinct fandoms.

  • Shane Hollander & Hockey Arenas (Heated Rivalry) and Ilya Rozanov & Hockey Arenas (Heated Rivalry): These nominations have been rejected due to the Hockey Arenas not counting as characters.

Summary: “Don’t be silly,” John says. “You’re Bob and I’m Bing; now get in the car and let’s go find ourselves a Dorothy.”

Reccer's Notes: A classic road trip fic, with John and Rodney meandering across the USA toward California. Eventually, after some pining on John's part, the inevitable happens and the trip becomes a metaphor for them wandering towards each other.

If I'm not totally mistaken, this is the longest chapter of the story. However, I promise that things will start to look up by the end of it. Stick with it, it'll all turn out okay! Also, a heads-up again: I'm travelling today and tomorow. It's likely that tomorrow's chapter will drop later than normal. Don't worry, I'll get around to it eventually :)

And now, enjoy. Lot's of h/c ahead for those of you who like this kind of stuff!

Summary: When he came to, the bus was on the freeway. The windows were dewed with drops of melted snow that shone with captured light. Outside, traffic was at a standstill. Dingy slush covered the roads, gradually accumulating as snow drifted down from the woolen sky, the flakes picked out in sharp contrast where they plunged into the light of streetlamps and headlights. Wei WuXian laughed softly to see it. When he turned away from the window, he saw that the beautiful man from earlier was still sitting next to him, watching him with an expression that might, optimistically, be called inquisitive.

“The snow,” Wei WuXian said, gesturing outside. “It looks like champagne bubbles, only going the wrong way.” He laughed again, and rubbed his head. “Have you ever felt drunk, but been pretty sure you weren't drinking? Haha, no, never mind me. I'm just tired.” He rubbed a hand over his face, wanting desperately to sleep.

Author’s Notes: For [archiveofourown.org profile] firesonic152.
For my friend, who got stuck on a bus and sent me photos. XD

(See the end of the work for other works inspired by this one.)

Reccer's Notes: A modern AU account of a snowy night when Lan Wangji serves as Public Transit Guardian Angel to an exhausted, dissociating, and hypothermic Wei Wuxian—who has been in far more trouble than he realizes.

(Until the summer of 2023, shanks’ mare and Dayton, Ohio’s city bus system were my primary modes of transportation. This hazy grey winter ghost-story-or-is-it? is anchored in Suspicious_Popsicle’s concrete lived-in detail, nailing the experience of looping interminably around just to shelter from the elements, waiting for the next opportunity for a stop or transfer (better hope you have at least a day pass and a sympathetic driver, and that you don’t drowse off again!) And of trudging wearily forward through the hostile frigid weather in sodden Vimes’ Boots! Boots! Boots!

Suffice to say that the idea of rescue by a steadfast, devoted, and ethereally handsome Saint Bernard held a profound appeal.)

(This hits similar narrative pressure points to [archiveofourown.org profile] willowcatkin’s Guardian fic The White Umbrella, recced here.)
